At Mohs 8, topaz is very hard — harder than quartz, amethyst or citrine — but it has one perfect cleavage plane, which means a sharp knock in the wrong direction can chip or split it. That is why bezel and flush settings are recommended over high prongs for daily-wear topaz.

Imperial & Precious Topaz

Is Blue Topaz Natural? The Honest Answer
Here is the truth every blue-topaz buyer deserves. Natural blue topaz is genuinely rare, and almost always very pale. Roughly 95% of the blue topaz on the market — sky, Swiss and London blue — starts as colourless topaz and is turned blue by irradiation and heat. This is a legitimate, industry-standard treatment, and crucially it is permanent and stable: the colour does not fade with light or heat. The stone is still genuine topaz — but the colour is created, not natural, and that should always be disclosed. (By contrast, white topaz is often treated too, while imperial topaz is naturally coloured.) Topaz in Astrology
In Vedic astrology it is yellow (imperial) topaz that carries the classical meaning: it is the accepted substitute for Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj), the gemstone of Jupiter (Guru) — worn for wisdom, prosperity, career and marriage, traditionally on the index finger of the right hand on a Thursday, and recommended especially for Sagittarius and Pisces. Blue topaz, being a modern, mostly-treated gem, does not have this classical planetary role — it is chosen for its colour, calm and value rather than astrology, and in the West topaz is simply the November birthstone (with citrine). Daily Wear in Dubai: Abaya-Safe Settings & Care
For daily wear, bezel-set topaz is strongly recommended. A bezel wraps the girdle in a continuous metal collar, removing exposed prongs that snag on abaya, chiffon and silk — and, because topaz has that one cleavage plane, a bezel also spreads any impact and reduces the risk of chipping.
