How to Judge Amethyst Colour Quality
Colour is the single most important value factor in amethyst. It is not graded on a standardised scale like diamonds, but gemologists use consistent criteria. The finest amethyst shows a deep, saturated purple with red and blue secondary hues — a grade informally called “Siberian” in the trade, originally from Russian mines but now a colour standard regardless of origin. At the lower end, pale lavender amethyst has less iron and reads washed-out, appealing for minimalist pieces but commanding a lower price.

Natural vs Lab-Created (and Heated) Amethyst
Amethyst is affordable and abundant in nature, but it is worth knowing what you are buying. Lab-created (synthetic) amethyst is common — it is genuine amethyst, the same quartz chemically and optically, grown in a laboratory rather than the earth. It is inexpensive and perfectly real, but it should always be disclosed, never sold as natural. The clearest visual tell of a natural stone is colour zoning — an uneven purple with paler or bluish patches and small natural inclusions; lab-grown and dyed stones tend to be one, too-perfect, uniform colour, and glass imitations trap tiny round bubbles. Heat treatment is also part of the amethyst story: gently heated, amethyst turns golden and becomes citrine — which is why most commercial “citrine” is actually heated amethyst. At the cheap end, “amethyst” can even be dyed quartz (watch for neon colour pooling in cracks).
